If you are buying blank cards to make your own invitations, and plan to use a non-fold card, 80lb cover is an average weight used to make an invitation. However, not all printers handle 80lb cover, so this decision also depends on the printer that will be used.
Pre-designed invitations that you can order online from a brand-name invitation company offer a selection of invitation styles that vary in paper weight, so it is best to request a sample of an invitation before making a purchase.
A special consideration should be noted if an invitation will be letterpressed. Due to the process of 'imprinting' the paper when letterpressing, thicker cardstock can produce better results in terms of how deep it can be imprinted. Cotton lettra, made by Crane & Co., is specially made for letterpress, and is available in very thick weights. Cotton lettra paper is available from Affectionate Digitals, as well as many other papers well-suited for letterpress.
Pearlized Champagne Embossed Paper from India has a cover weight sufficient to make a pocket folder style invitation or could be used as a backing for a printed invitation.
Purple Flocked Paper from India is made of cotton, and is well-suited for use as a backing for a nonfold invitation. This paper could also be mounted on museum board for an extra thick backing, adding a top layer with the invitation wording.
